Returning sci-fi skein "Doctor Who" broke records for BBC America on Saturday. The show premiered to 1.27 million total viewers (live and same-day DVR), making it the most-watched telecast in the history of the Beeb's Stateside sister net.

"The Impossible Astronaut," the first seg in the new season's two-part opener, aired Saturday at 9 p.m. New series is exec produced and largely written by Piers Wenger, Beth Willis and Scottish scribe Steven Moffat, who scripted the first of the upcoming "Tintin" films for helmer Steven Spielberg but turned down the sequels to pen "Who," with help from writers including "Coraline" scribe Neil Gaiman (who wrote for the current season).

"Who" boasts a healthy Stateside following, with more than 1,000 fanboys (and fangirls) packing out Gotham's Village East Cinemas for a screening of the first two segs in the season earlier this month.
