[edit]

ACTOR William Hartnell (above) is giving up his television role as "Dr. Who."

He will be seen in the opening episodes when the BBC's three - year - old serial—about a cantankerous old scientist who makes journeys in time —returns next month.

His last appearance will be on October 29.

"Three years in one part is a good innings," says 58-year-old Hartnell, "and it is time for a change,"

Vanish

He wants to return to stage and film work.

How the BBC is considering how to explain Dr. Who's departure.

He may just vanish into space, or—the more likely solution — another actor will be made up to look as much like the original Dr. Who as possible.

Previously, viewers knew Hartnell best as the bullying sergeant major in I T V's " The Army Game."
