Doctor Who, recently voted viewers' favourite TV show, has now been given the seal of approval by Britain's writers. The BBC Wales-made series, which was last night filming in Cardiff (see left), has landed a Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award for the Best TV Series, beating Life on Mars and New Tricks. The accolade comes two weeks after the sci-fi show won Most Popular Drama and Most Popular Actor at the National Television Awards, with David Tennant, who plays the Doctor, winning once again.

Doctor Who, which also has a string of Baftas to its name, picked up the gong at the weekend, with two members of the writing team going to London to collect the award.

Gareth Roberts, writer of the The Shakespeare Code episode, said, "It's a particular honour to receive an award from our peers in the writing community.

"We're all surprised and delighted, and looking forward to bringing more Doctor Who to BBC1 in 2008." Steven Moffat, who wrote the Blink episode, added, "I am absolutely thrilled to be part of the winning Doctor Who writing team. "Writing for Doctor Who has been my dream since I was seven years old - now that I've got an award for it, maybe I can get a girlfriend."
