It's funny to think that just over a decade ago, the Doctor Who Christmas special didn't exist. Since 2005, the festive episode has become a holiday staple.
Over ten years and ten specials (11 by the month's end), seasonal episodes have followed the Doctor and his companions as they take on the Sycorax and the Racnoss, melt the heart of a bitter Michael Gambon, and escape dreams within dreams, all while celebrating the uniquely downbeat appeal of a British Christmas with a sci-fi twist.
Doctor Who: the 10 Christmas Specials lets you relive those moments, with all the Christmas specials so far (excluding William Hartnell oddity The Feast of Steven, fact fans) brought together — but if you think this is a simple cash-in, remember how non-filler these one-off editions have been.
The specials aren't just festive frippery. David Tennant's first and last episodes were specials (2005's The Christmas Invasion and 2009's The End of Time), as was Matt Smith's handover to Peter Capaldi (2013's The Time of the Doctor). The Christmas Day edition has become a place for major changes. Just look at departing companion Jenna Coleman. Her debut: 2012 special The Snowmen.
Of course, the specials aren't all dramatic triumphs, but for every meh-ry Christmas of Matt Smith taking on evil trees (2011's The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe) or David Tennant saving Kylie in a space-Titanic (2007's Voyage of the Damned) there's a winner like the Inception-style madness of 2014's Last Christmas or the triumphant fun of The Christmas Invasion. Even the worst of these one-offs has more style and imagination than most of the specials populating Christmas telly.
