POLICE boxes could reappear on Britain's streets to boost public confidence and help reduce fear of crime, senior officers said yesterday.
The original boxes were made obsolete in 1969 by walkie-talkies and greater use of cars but they achieved immortality as Dr Who's time machine the Tardis.
The Association of Chief Police Officers has suggested that a modern version - topped with a blue lamp like its 20th century predecessor could reassure the public and allow people to make emergency calls, according to Police Review magazine.
Inspector Ian Kelly, of Northamptonshire Police, said: "It would be a modern and very visible way for a member of the public to get in touch with a police officer."
The idea is one of several that have been sent to the Home Office for consideration.
Home Secretary David Blunkett wants to raise the profile of police because research suggests that fear of crime is greater than the number of offences.
