IN A WEEK of mediocre reality television and dispiriting comic distortions of public life, it was a delight to sink into the triumphant fantasy provided by the latest series of Dr Who. Notwithstanding such admired phenomena as Star Trek: The Next Generation and the recent disinterment of Battlestar Galactica. Russell T Davies' new version of the vintage show must surely stand as the most satisfactory re-invention in television history. Since its return in 2005, the new Who has managed to sustain the original invention and playfulness, while adding a new poignancy to the mix.
Following classics from the last series - yes, classics! - such as Blink and Human Nature, the new season had a lot to live tip to. The first episode, which featured Sarah Lancashire as an alien nanny with a malign interest in diet treatments. did not quite meet that standard, hut. even when on cruise control, this Dr Who remains a cheering, thrilling entertainment. David Tennant is the most lovable Doctor since Tom Baker, Catherine Tate. his new companion. brought greater restraint to the stopping of her glottals than she manages on her curiously admired sketch show. Tonight they visit the destruction of Pompeii. Be there.
