Doctor Who,' Star Trek' team up

Two storied science-fiction franchises come together with this week's comic book miniseries teaming the characters of "Doctor Who" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation!"
"Star Trek: The Next Generation/ Doctor Who: Assimilation" is released by IDW Publishing in conjunction with BBC Worldwide Consumer Products and CBS Consumer Products.
"By joining these two sci-fi powerhouses, fans will be taken on the ultimate adventure through time and space," said Liz Kalodner, executive vice president and general manager of CBS Consumer Products, in a news release.
The villains of the piece are two mechanized races that have made trouble for the heroes: the Borg and the Cybermen. When these two groups unite, the galaxy is at stake.
In the series, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise join forces with the Doctor and his companions.
"We are excited about this new adventure for the Doctor and the fact that he will be traveling with Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his iconic crew," said BBC Worldwide's Soumya Srira-man, executive vice president Home Entertainment and Licensing.
This eight-issue series is written by Scott and David Tipton ("Star Trek: Infestation) with Tony Lee ("Doctor Who"). The covers will be painted by J.K. Woodward ("Fallen Anger").
Dirk Wood, IDW Publishing's vice president of marketing, promoted the series to comic-book retailers at the ComicsPRO annual members' meeting in Dallas earlier in the year.
"Obviously Doctor Who fans and Star Trek fans, some of them might know each other, so there's some interest there," he said.
Both of these long-running science fiction concepts began as television series.
"Doctor Who" began airing in 1963 on the BBC. The Doctor is a time-traveling benevolent alien. He traverses time and space in the TARDIS, a ship that's bigger on the inside than the outside, and that looks from the outside like a 195os police call box. The Doctor is currently portrayed by Matt Smith, the nth actor to do so.
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" began in 1987, set about 100 years after the timeline of the original "Star Trek" series. Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart, leads the crew of the Enterprise on exploratory and diplomatic adventures throughout space.
