DENNIS Potter's reference to John Birt and Marmaduke Hussey as "a pair of croak-voiced Daleks" has created even more stir than the recent suggestion that Lord Reith was homosexual. It has rather delighted Peter Hawkins, creator of that ghoulish sound of "Exterminate, exterminate" which uttered from black and white television when Dr Who first started, 30 years ago. "I used a staccato and inflected voice horribly distorted by a ring modulator which gave it a metallic quality," he explains, interestingly. In one episode the Daleks were robbed of their evil and called "the precious ones." Doubtless, Potter (pictured left) will have people in mind for this name as well.
