THE girls in Dr. Who are getting a sexier style.
The Doctor, actor Peter Davison, approves of his assistants' new image.... but there'll still be no hanky-panky.
Sarah Sutton (Nyssa) is shedding her sensible trousers for exotically coloured culottes In the next series.
Janet Fielding (Tegan) will appear in frilly drawers and a lacy corset instead of her severe uniform.
But Davison insists the Doctor will continue to resist all temptation. Davison said: "The Doctor has strict morals. Each actor who plays him has a responsibility to maintain that tradition.
"The audience. especially the children. has to believe that men and women can be close friends sharing a home without sex."
The responsibility for the Doctor's healthy image continues off screen.
-It wouldn't do," said Davison, "for me to be involved in any scandal.
Bonus
"Fighting in pubs, throwing things at my wife — anything outrageous — is not for me."
Davison sacrificed a large financial bonus to play Dr. Who.
His TV commercials for beer had to stop because there are rules preventing actors who appeal to a children's audience promoting alcohol.
Davison revealed the girls' new look in Amsterdam, where parts of the next series—to be seen in January—are being filmed.
He was wearing an old boiler suit with his face covered in a mixture of slime and Rice Crispies.
The disguise, created by patient hours of make-up work, did not confuse the Dutch.
They are enjoying an earlier series of All Creatures Great and Small which in Holland is entitled Dr. Herriott. Frequently he was greeted: "Good morning, Dr. Herriott."
Dr. Who, once popular Holland, was banned several years ago because was too frightening for the children.
Nobody asked the children who are upset about the decision.
Later, in the familiar deck-chair striped flank, long jacket, cricket sweater and white boots, Davison talked about Dr. Wo as he approaches his twentieth year on TV.
Harem
Davison, unlike the previous Doctors, is an tractive 31-year-old. net and Sarah refer to their roles as "the doctor's harem."
'The golden rule," said Davison, "is no hanky-panky. Originally the actor was a grandfather figure.
"Then, a sort of father. Then, a favourite uncle. Now, he is just a good friend to the girls."
Just then a hired tandem bicycle arrived and the good Doctor took net off on a pedal tour the city.
"Call it" he said, "a bicycle made for Who."
