[edit]

TVOntario (Channel 19) has cancelled six instalments of the science fiction series, Dr. Who, because a Chinese Canadian group found them "dangerous, offensive, racist stereotyping of people of Chinese origin.

The protest came from the Chinese Canadian National Council for Equality, which objected to six instalments of the series, produced by the British Broadcasting Corp. for the past 16 years.

The six cancelled shows were called The Talons of Weng-Chian and the council said they "associate the Chinese with everything fearful and despicable."

Dr. Joseph Wong, council president, protested that the Talons of Weng-Chian "includes everything from an evil Fu Manchu character to pigtailed coolies and laundrymen who submissively commit suicide on their master's orders.

Don Thompson, director of TV-Ontario's Open Sector, said in a letter to the council he is now aware of the racist stereotyping.
