CRITIC'S CHOICE

BBC1 7.00 DR WHO ★★★★★

As we've seen with The Two Ronnies, Masterchef and the show at the foot of this column, the BBC has no qualms about reviving old series, provided there's scope to give them a 21st-century tweak. But none of those has generated as much excitement, anticipation and, OK, hype, as the return of this classic Saturday teatime series. With Christopher Eccleston — the ninth actor to take on the title role — and Billie Piper as his latest companion, Rose Tyler, it does a fine job in respecting the Dr Who tradition without being a slave to it, meaning it'll appeal both to older fans and to younger viewers unfamiliar with the original. It's dramatic, humorous and ultimately great fun — and, no you don't need to be a sci-fi geek to enjoy it.
