[edit]

THE NEW Dr Who, with Christopher Eccleston in the title role and Billie Piper as his comely assistant, was ill received in the Highland home where I spent Easter. The much-hyped special effects were considered a prodigious waste of money by the BBC, and the acting — particularly that of the doctor and a black man terrified of the blancmange-type monster — was very bad. Mr Eccleston cut too boring a figure for us to believe Miss Piper would elect to become his assistant. She's quite perky, but there's a credibility problem over exposing her to monsters. How could anyone who shared a bed with the ginger-haired DJ Chris Evans be truly frightened of anything?
