Dr. Who's top dog, K-9, is to be put down because he is too bright. The mechanical hound with built-in computer and blast gun will disappear from the TV screen in the New Year, along with the Time-Lord's present companion, Romana.
John Nathan-Turner, producer said: "K-9 has been very popular over the last three years but it is time we called it a day.
"He is an animal who can do anything and he makes it too easy for the Doctor to get out of situations."
K-9 went on sick leave earlier this year after going walkies along Brighton beach and falling into the sea.
The BBC is refusing to say how he will be written out of the series.
