The 21-year-old television series taken off the screens earlier this year, returns in the Autumn in three programmes but on radio.
Actor Colin Baker will paly the title role and Nicola Bryant his assistant.
A BBC spokesman said that the doctor would feature in a new light entertainment programme.
"It will contain a Dr Who story, not a new series as such but one story over three days."
BBC Television is also working on a "revitalised" Dr Who series for next year. which will run for a longer period in a "reinvigorated" and shorter form - 25 minutes as against 45.
