IN 17 years of travelling Dr. Who has visited many bizarre and wonderful places while becoming part of the BBC establishment.

But the Tardis never touched down in Hollywood until now - and it has been a spectacular arrival.

The show is now on most nights of the week here and although not aired by a major network has built up a vast following.

Dr. Whole, mostly taken for granted in Britain, is seen here in the early evening and is becoming as popular as the late night antics of Benny Hill.

So much so that on a rainy weekend in Downtown Los Angeles more than 1,000 people paid £8 a head to attend a two-day Dr. Who Convention.

There were Tom Baker Dr. Who lookalikes, Daleks, a specially constructed Tardis and appearances of two of the stars of past shows, Elizabeth Sladen and Ian Marton.

Their emergence from the Tardis and chat with a Dalek on Sunset Strip bemused and the uninititated locals.

Their air fares and other expenses were met by the admission fees to the convention which had large advance bookings. Anne Moore, one of the organisers, explained: "The charges were made only to meet expenses, not make any profit. Any money over will go to getting together again. We all like to get together and it was a wonderful success.

"The show has become a phenomenon. The audience has just built and built and it is not just dedicated science fiction fans it fascinates a much wider audience."

The unexpected success has caught the film and TV people here off guard. It will be no surprise if they retaliate with "Dr. When" or "Dr. What" or, perhaps even "Doctor In The House."
