DR WHO is in danger of being axed because millions preferred to watch ITV's long-running Coronation Street.
Only five million tuned in: to the latest series. Now actor Silvester McCoy, who played Dr Who, and Sophie Aldred, his assistant, have had their contract options for a 27th series withdrawn. The decision is likely to anger fans who felt McCoy was the best of the seven time lords.
The BBC is also considering selling the series to independent producers.
A spokesman said: "We cannot say when it will be returning. But it has run for 26 years and there is no reason why it should not continue for another 26."
Spelling correction: Sylvester McCoy
