Doctor Who returns to the ABC this week after an 11 month absence.

The ABC will screen the new series starting on Monday, December 9 at 6.30 pm to replace The National.

Doctor Who Fan Club President, Mr Dallas Jones, said he was excited at the Doctor's return from his BBC imposed time warp.

"This is the series which made the BBC suspend it for 18 months," he said.

"Filming of the next series won't begin until March next year."

BBC controller, Mr Michael Grade. said the series was relying on too much "straight forward on the nose violence" and the BBC would have to rethink the shape of the program.

He said the $140,000 cost to produce a 50-minute episode was too much and robbed other BBC programs of valuable resources.

Doctor Who has been running for 22 years and in that time, has undergone four regenerations.

The original doctor, William Hartnell was replaced by Patrick Troughton. followed by Jon Pertwee. Tom Baker, Peter Davison and the latest, Colin Baker.

Mr Jones, who has been president of the Australasian Doctor Who Fan Club for two and a half years, said the ABC was responding to a lot of pressure from Doctor Who fans to screen the new series.

"The series contains six new Doctor Who adventures," he said.

"The ABC will then show two episodes from the Patrick Troughton series and then as many of the Jon Pertwee series as it can get its hands on."

Original

"At the moment it is trying to get the BBC to release the original William Hartnell series but It does not seem to be having much luck." he said.

The first of the new series sees Doctor Who pitted against one of his old enemies In Attack of the Cybermen.

The Cybermen had originally attacked Earth in 1986 but had been defeated.
