[edit]

It is 20 years since the Doctor came back into our lives with Christopher Eccleston as the Time Lord and Billie Piper's Rose a companion who offered more in the way of emotional depth than any who had travelled before her. And oh, what a time it was to be alive and watching this joyously inventive show you had carried a torch for while it was in the wilderness - or, crucially, were discovering for the first time. Because let's not forget that writer Russell T Davies's reinvention of Doctor Who managed to galvanise pre-existing die-hards while also creating a whole new generation of viewers. We only need to consider the sometimes toxic state of sci-fi fandom in 2025 to realise just how rare a feat that was.

Two decades on, the nerds have, as is often said, inherited the earth. Marvel is ubiquitous and Star Wars continues to expand its universe, so the Doctor now fights the good fight in a more crowded field. But time will not defeat him: keep 12 April free for your next trip in the Tardis. See feature: page 12
