IT was when he was wielding a pistol and worrying about the Irish famine in The Hanging Gale that Paul McGann, 36, was earmarked as the next Dr Who.
He was spotted by casting directors of Universal Television of America as a possible for the Tardis while he was in the drama nom BBC Northern Ireland about Ireland's past.
And in the end he won the most coveted sci-fi role of all from the likes of Sting, Simon Callow and Alan Rickman who were all candidates too.
McGann is following a long line of famous names to play the role in a two-hour television special being made by Universal and BBC Worldwide.
He will be the eighth good doctor since the series began in 1963 — the others were William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Silvester McCoy.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet — I loved Dr Who as a little boy," said the Liverpool actor today.
The long-running series was axed in 1989 by the BBC in spite of protests from fans after it slumped in the ratings.
