The dishiest Dr Who to date - Peter Davison says it's time to quit his Tardis. He has been in the smash-hit sci-fi show for less than three years.
His decision to leave was not the result of a back-stage bust-up or Beeb pressure, he said. But Dr Who bosses admitted they wanted to "change the style of the doctor completely."
Davison, 31, was the youngest and sexiest of all the five doctors. With him, the BBC tried to go for a different audience and switched the show from kiddies' viewing on Saturday to two peak-time weekday evening screenings.
But, viewing figures were pegged at around the eight million mark - down on previous series and a huge drop from the all-time high of 14 million in 1976 with Tom Baker as the Doctor.
Davison, who played Tristan the vet in All Creatures Great And Small, said: "Three years was the length of time I had firmly set myself when I started. And, when this series We are now working on goes out next January for 26 weeks it will be three years.
"It is very easy for an actor to stay in a safe role, but there is a danger of being type-cast"
Dr Who producer, Joan Nathan-Turner, confessed: "The next Doctor should be older. and a little more eccentric. And, I'm not ruling out the chance of having a lady doctor.
"The new character will be vastly different the strengths and successes of the program is because of the difference between successive doctors."
