His eyes, framed by a mop of unruly hair bulge with a thyroid intensity, yet to millions of viewers across the world he's got mere charisma than a dozen screen heart-throbs.
Tom Baker is his name but in 28 countries he's an ageless superman possessed of two hearts called Dr Who, a do-gooder roaming through space and time and gathering fan clubs by the score.
Over the years I've lunched with many famous showbiz personalities at a city restaurant, but none has attracted so much attention as this Liverpool-horn actor.
Waitresses and customers lined up to get his autograph and even the kitchen was denuded of staff as cooks and scullery hands panted to our table Just to say hello.
No wonder Aunty ABC, who brought him to Sydney, is putting a lot of faith in the new Dr Who series which begins next Monday at 6.30 pm. It has to be a winner.
Resumes
And no wonder an actress of the status of Glenda Jackson has made it known that she would like to have a small part in a few episodes of this top-rating series.
But the new girl to appear in Dr Who which resumes production in England for the 16th year on March 15 will be Lalla Ward from The Duchess Of Duke Street. She'll play Dr Who's assistant.
Meanwhile another lady who is even more important to Tom Baker has arrived quietly in Sydney from London to join him for the rest of his stay in Australia.
Her name is Marianne Ford a set designer, but the BBC which produces Dr Who isn't too happy about that togetherness as it feels for some odd reason: that its star shouldn't dent his image with young viewers to having a real-life girl friend.
Tom also told me he is planning to cut his first record as a singer.
Recorded
He's already made three LPs which are recorded dramatisations of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, and Dr Who And The Pescatons.
Proof that the man has a splendid sense of humour is his choice of songs which he would like to sing.
One is Loola, Loola, Loold, Loola, Bye-Bye made famous by the late Paul Robeson. And the flip side Yes. We Have No Bananas.
