Writer Russell T Davies ought to be congratulated for swinging the pendulum of Doctor Who back to the mainstream. His approach to the show really does seem designed to give it mass appeal again.
First, he rehires David Tennant to pick up lapsed viewers. Then he brings in Ncuti Gatwa, guaranteed to snare a teen crowd familiar with Sex Education. And now we get this Christmas special in the ideal family-viewing slot. What more could you ask for? Well, a fresh companion, too, of course — so meet Ruby Sunday, as played by former Corrie star Millie Gibson. Her first adventure with the Doctor is an ideal jumping-on point and involves a guest appearance by Davina McCall, a musical number and mythical goblins.
Doctor Who: Unleashed goes behind the scenes at 7pm on BBC3. See feature: page 14
