[edit]

THAT intrepid timelord, Dr Who, has the habit of turning up in the wrong place in his travels through time and space.

But his return to the ABC after a Christmas break at 9.30 tonight — three hours later than usual — is strictly by design.

For this hour-long special episode of the popular BBC children's science-fiction program that claims a cultish adult following is classified by the Australian censor as adult.

The alien beings and monsters Dr Who normally encounters on his adventures are scary enough for the younger set.

This story is so gory the ABC are holding back until after most kiddies' bedtime.

In The Brain of Morbeus, a mad professor is after Dr Who's head.

The action takes place on the desolate planet Karn, inhabited usually only by the Sisterhood, guardians of an eternal flame that produces an elixir of life.

The evil professor and his one-armed servant have arrived there with the brain of Morbeus, timelord and criminal genius.

The professor is making a body for Morbeus and wants Dr Who's head to top it off.

In this series, Dr Who is played by Tom Baker and his assistant, Sarah Jane Smith, by Elizabeth Sladen.

A new series of Dr Who — more suitable for children —will begin, in the normal time of 6.30 on February 18.

Dr Who will get a new assistant and the show will mark the first return of the Daleks — a type of evil robot — in four years.

Meanwhile, Anthony Howe, head of the Sydney Dr Who Fan Club, who admits to being hooked on the show for 11 years,; is planning to celebrate the 16th anniversary of Dr Who's arrival in Australia in May.

Spelling correction: Morbius, Elisabeth Sladen
