[edit]

DR WHO landed on Brighton beach today — but got cold feet.

He was on a flying visit with his lovely companion, Romans.

But it was the wrong time and weather—so K9, the digital dog, had a quick pad-die before they took off again in the Tardis.

The seaside jaunt was being filmed by the BBC as part of a new series due to be shown in August.

A 30-strong television crew took over part of Brighton beach to shoot the opening sequence of the first episode. While the crew set up lights and camera equipment on the Fish Market Hard, a small crowd gathered nearby to watch the spectacle.

Sequence

Dressed in a full length leather coat to keep out the cold, producer John Nathan-Turner spelled out the plot. Without giving too much away, the sequence opens with the Doctor, his companion and the dog on holiday in Brighton, he said.

"He has come to attend the opening of the Brighton Pavilion, but the Tardis has got the time wrong. It's 1912 and off season.

"Having a miserable time, they get back into the time machine and go to another planet he knows for their holiday."

Dr Who began his time travelling ten years ago and this series of 28 episodes will be the longest yet.

The crew are staying at the Queen's Hotel, and were returning to the studio today to finish the episode.

Freezing

Dr Who is played by curly haired actor Tom Baker, who said with a smile: "I like Brighton but it's a bit cold at the moment. My feet are freezing."

He was dressed in a plum coloured Regency coat for the scene and cut a dashing figure on the seafront. Autograph hunters stopped to have a word with their hero.

Romana is played by lovely Lalla Ward, who has dressed for the part in close fitting sailors suit.

Her verdict on the seafront session: "Brrrr ..."
