A Hollywood film of Doctor Who could be made within eight years, and leaked emails from Sony reveal that TV writers had serious misgivings about the plan.
According to an exchange of emails between two Sony executives published by WikiLeaks, Danny Cohen, the director of TV at the BBC, said that he would include a cinema adaptation of Doctor Who in his eight-year plan for the brand.
Andrea Wong, president of international production at Sony, sent an email in January last year to Michael Lynton, chief executive at Sony, stating: "Just spoke to Danny Cohen re Dr Who. He said that while there has been tremendous interest (and pressure from [BBC Worldwide]) to do a Dr Who film, the show runners feel very clear that they don't want to do one at this moment." She says a film "won't happen in the next year to 18 months" but will happen within the eight-year period.
More than 30,000 documents and 170,000 emails have been uploaded to the WikiLeaks site since they were stolen by hackers last November from Sony Pictures Entertainment. It has now been made searchable.
The BBC and BBC Worldwide declined to comment on the leaked emails. When asked about plans for a film, a BBC Worldwide spokesman said: "A Doctor Who commercial movie is not part of the current plans for the brand."
