THE spat between comely thespian David Tennant and operatic curmudgeon Jonathan Miller has piqued my interest. Miller deplores the celebrity casting in serious theatre, which led to Dr Who's Hamlet, while Tennant has riposted that this a bit rich from a man who owes his notoriety to a sketch show, Beyond the Fringe. Besides, Tennant says, the quality of Dr Who's writing elevates it above the "crassly popular". As for me, I will now definitely watch the Dr Who Christmas special at 6pm on the day — a time when I usually feel strongly in need of metaphysical poetry. It will be something of a breakthrough for the BBC as far as audience demographics are concerned for I've never seen Tennant in the time-travelling role before, while, to be frank, I've seen Hamlet so many times it's beginning to seem like old hat.
