Bow tie and tweed jacket put Dr Who in a time warp
DOCTOR Who is used to travelling back in time. Now his clothes have, too.
The first picture of the new Doctor Matt Smith in costume was released yesterday - and the designers have clearly been inspired by the early years of the programme.
As well as a patterned shirt, rolled-up trousers and scuffed boots, Matt, 26, was wearing a purple bowtie, the first time the Time Lord has worn one since the early 1970s, when Jon Pertwee played the role.
Patrick Troughton, who played the part in 1966-69, was the only other Doctor to sport one.
The new look is finished off with a vintage Harris Tweed checked jacket, which is also a reference to the show's past. From his first incarnation William Hartnell, who conquered baddies in some pretty natty drainpipes, the Doctor has liked a bit of check.
Tom Baker, as well as the endless scarf, also liked garish checks, as did Sylvester McCoy, who played the part in the late 1980s.
In more recent years though, the Doctor has developed more of a taste for the modern. Christopher Eccleston, the first Doctor of the Russell T Davies revival, liked a hard-man leather jacket, biker boots and black jeans.
His successor David Tennant preferred indie, Jarvis Cocker-style suits and Converse trainers.
Reaction to the Doctor's new look among the fans on the forums was mixed. Some were relieved that rumours the youngest actor to play the role would be dressed in a hoodie were wrong; others were worried that a bow tie would be too old and stuffy for young fans of the BBC show.
As he arrived on set in Cardiff for the first day of filming yesterday, Matt Smith said he was excited to be getting down to work. "I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show, " he added.
Joining him on set was his new assistant Amy Pond, played by Scots actress Karen Gillan.
There is also a new man in charge: the Scottish writer Steven Moffat has taken over from Russell T Davies as show runner. Moffat has been extremely popular with fans as a writer for the show. He said: "And here it is, the big moment - the new Doctor, and his new best friend. And here's me, with the job I wanted since I was seven. Matt and Karen are going to be incredible, and Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way."
Kerry Monighan, a spokeswoman for the show, said: "The jacket is a vintage Harris Tweed."
Harris Tweed jackets are known to survive a lifetime - or, in the Doctor's case, several lifetimes.
Matt Smith's first episode will be shown next year following David Tennant's final three episodes.
