Exclusive The Doctor Can Travel Through Time But David Tennant Reckons Aussie Singer Is The Real Star Of New Timelord Adventure Doctor Who Bbc One

TIMELORD David Tennant reckons his new co-star Kylie Minogue is a bigger icon than Doctor Who.

The former Neighbours star becomes the Doctor's latest companion in an hour-long Christmas special.

Kylie will play the role of Astrid - a Waitress on The Titanic alongside David Tennant's Doctor in Voyage of the Damned.

The Christmas storyline will follow on directly from the ending of series three where viewers witnessed The Titanic crash through the Tardis walls.

Scots star David is delighted to have Kylie on board the Tardis.

He said: "It's very exciting to have Kylie on the show. She's part of our national consciousness, isn't she?

"She's as big a legend as Doctor Who itself, if not bigger, so it seems like a nice meeting of icons for Christmas Day."

Kylie - who shot to fame in the Eighties as Charlene in Neighbours - swapped acting for singing and released her 10th album X this week after battling breast cancer.

She takes over from the Doctor's last companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) before his new companion Donna, played by Catherine Tate takes over next year.

Donna was first seen last Christmas as a runaway bride who helped battle agiant alien spider with the Doctor.

Despite her own massive fame, Kylie admits to feeling humble to be part of such a long-running British show.

And appearing on Doctor Who might stop Kylie flying to Australia for Christmas with X Factor judge sister Dannii.

Kylie said: "I felt so elated to be there and to be part of that Christmas Day feeling. And it might be my very first Christmas in England.

"I'm usually in Australia, in the sunshine. I'm normally not facing the perils of the universe. So this will be a unique Christmas."

David and Kylie were said to have become closer when his mum died of cancer and the Australian was there to comfort him.

There are even rumours that Kylie could come back at some point in future shows. She said: "It's not up to me but I know there has been talk that my character could be reintroduced at a later date. We'll have to wait and see.

"I've always been a fan of Doctor Who and when you think how long it's been running, it is a series that is a unique piece of television history."

As well as Kylie there's a stellar cast for the sci-fi favourite. Geoffrey Palmer, perhaps most famous for his role in the long running BBC drama Butterflies will play the role of Captain of the Titanic.

As well as David there are other Scots in the Christmas special. Gray O'Brien, of River City and Coronation Street, and Jimmy Vee, who has previously been in Doctor Who as the Moxx of Balhoon, will be back.

While there are story rumours that Kylie's character Astrid will seduce the Doctor all he will say is that he has to do lots of running rather than snogging. He said: "There's a lot of running for me to do and, if I'm honest, I quite enjoy playing the all action hero."

And dressed in a black and white outfit that makes her look like a French Maid what were Kylie's first impressions of being on Doctor Who?

She giggled: "The Tardis is just gigantic."

'I've always been a fan of Doctor Who - it is a series that is unique'
