I quite like David Tennant as the new Doctor on "Doctor Who." He has a lightness that's refreshing; Christopher Eccleston was good in the part too, but perhaps too intense. What I don't like about the first couple of episodes of the new season is the same problem that bedeviled the last season of "Who": The show has plots so simple that they border on the moronic. Now, don't give me this stuff about how the "Doctor Who" has always had fluffy plots and it used to be aimed at kids, and it doesn't really matter because Russell T. Davies is such a zesty writer, blah blah blah. I'm not having it. There were a few good "Who" plots last season, but for the most part, this year and last, they've been boring and predictable. And I'm not sure this show, which features (perhaps in a tongue in cheek spirit) rubber-headed aliens and goofball plots, is a good match for "Battlestar Galactica," which tries - with success - to avoid the sci-fi cliches that "Who" revels in. Tennant and Billie Piper are great, I just wish the show didn't assume that cheeky dialogue and a fast pace matter more than plots that have depth.
