THE NEW DOCTOR MAY BE A WOMAN
TOM BAKER is to quit his TV role as Dr. Who.
A woman could replace him in the B B C series.
Tom, Dr. Who for seven years, gave the hint yesterday when he announced he will leave the show in March. He said: "I hope whoever gets the part will have as happy a time as I've had. I wish him—or her—luck."
The, new star will be the fifth time-travelling doctor William Hartnell was the first in 1963, followed by Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom.
"I'm giving up when I'm at the top,' said 46-year-old Tom.
But he added: "I felt this year that things were beginning to drag."
He admitted he was very upset when it was decided to axe K9, the show's robot dog.
A BBC spokesman said last night: "We know who we want to replace Tom, but negotiations are continuing."
