[edit]

STUDENT and a teacher are cowering in the corridor of a school as a terrifying alien emerges from the floor, then breaks through a tear in the fabric of time and space to hunt them down.

This could only be something out of Doctor Who - and it very nearly is. This is the spin-off set at Coal Hill Academy, fresh on BBC1 after its initial success on BBC3 last year.

Whovians (as the fans are called) will already know that our dear, departed companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) was once a teacher at Coal Hill, and the school has featured since the show's beginnings in 1963.

But now in the present day, Coal Hill is a sparkling new Academy and a place heaving with teenage angst. The Autumn Prom is looming - and we all know a prom is usually the focal point for something to end horribly. Plus, this opening episode is ominously titled 'For Tonight We Might Die:

So its billing as a Doctor Who for young adults is, thus far, sounding just as scary as the real thing. And before long, several of the students start seeing creepy shadows appear from nowhere.

They are actually deadly monsters, an evil alien race called the Shadow Kin.

Meanwhile, posters around the school reveal that a pupil is missing - and we can't imagine anything good has become of him.

Then there's a nasty physics teacher called Miss Quill (Katherine Kelly) and a new boy Charlie (Greg Austin), who definitely isn't from Sheffield as he insists.

Something is not quite right with those two. But who are they? And where on Earth is the Doctor when you need him?
