DR. WHO & THE DALEKS. Thorn-EMI Video. 78 minutes. Color.

THIS tame 1965 film starring Peter Cushing and Jenny Linden was inspired by the long-running BBC series, Dr. Who (which can be seen here at midnight on Ch. 12).

In Dr. Who & The Daleks, Cushing, as the absent-minded doctor, his two granddaughters and a friend, travel through space and time to a post-nuclear planet populated by Thals (good-guys) and Daleks (bad-guys).

There, they become imprisoned by the Daleks and must find a way to escape and save the Thals from extermination.

As in almost all Dr. Who shows, the special effects are almost laughable Dr. Who's time machine is a customized phone booth, and the evil Daleks — reptiles that live in robot-like cylinders — look like giant salt shakers.

No modern-day science fiction fan is going to be won over by the Buck Rogers-style sets but the acting is good, the script witty, and watchful parents will like the fact the action in Dr. Who & The Daleks is remarkably free of violence.

But strictly for young kids and Dr. Who historians.

CAPTION: EVIL Dalek with current TV Dr. Who Tom Baker ... the video version features Britain's master of horror movie roles, Peter Cushing (below)
