THE DR. WHO TECHNICAL MANUAL, by Mark Harris, Random House — British television producers are often forced to substitute talent and imagination for money, and this often produces long-running series such as the science fiction show, "Dr. Who." Now in its 21st year, "Dr. Who" is seen only on PBS stations in the U.S. During those 21 years, some five actors have played Who.
Dr. Who is an alien living on Earth who has a computer dog, a jet car, and a time-machine in the form of a phone booth. He bounces around spacetime, having one adventure after another, and is frequently accompanied by a series of attractive English actresses. The most vivid memory I have of Who is the show where he took his time machine to Earth before there was life on the planet. Actually, he wouldn't have been able to breathe, but who cares.
THE DR. WHO TECHNICAL MANUAL is obviously an attempt to emulate the highly successful STAR TREK TECHNICAL MANUAL, although I don't think viewers of "Dr. Who" take the equipment that seriously. But for anyone who does, this book contains the blueprints for the computer dog, the phone book and the rest of it.
