Trekkies and other science fiction fans will be able to satiate cravings for fantasy next month as Alternate Dimension and the Clayton County Library System sponsor Science Fiction Month.
Followers of Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek" and the popular "Dr. Who" series on television will gather at the Riverdale branch of the library system, 6701 Georgia Highway 85, each Saturday during January for a series of free programs on science fiction.
The first program is Jan. 10. Terminus Tardis, a society for fans of "Dr. Who," will meet from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
The Atlanta Star, Trek Society will take control of the Riverdale branch on Jan. 17 from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. On Jan. 24, the L-5, an organization dedicated to American space exploration, will meet from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with the Coca-Cola robot making an appearance from 1-3 p.m.
Role-playing games including Dager and Dragoncon will be discussed Jan. 31 by Ed Kramer from 11 a.m.-noon. The Phoenix Science Fiction Society represents all aspects of science fiction, and will discuss famous science fiction authors from noon-3 p.m.
Brochures will be available on what the society is all about, and the Coca-Cola robot will return from 1-3 p.m. Alternate Dimensions will announce winners of the Silver Nova science-fiction, short-story contest and the Magic Brush science-fiction art contest on Jan. 31.
Deadline for the 1987 Silver Nova Award is Sat., Jan. 17, at 5 p.m. Mail all entries to: Contest, P.O. Box 483, Ellenwood, Ga. 30049. Story subjects must be science fiction, fantasy, or a mixture of the
two. They must be typewritten on 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper, and entrants must include their names, addresses and telephone numbers.
The fiction should be no less than 500 words and no more than 2,000 words, and only one story per entrant will be accepted. Stories will be judged for creativity, imagination, entertainment value, readability and plot.
Submissions must not contain graphic sex or excessive violence. Entrants must be residents of Clayton County and 14 or older.
The contest winner will receive a trophy, certificate and free ticket to the Phoenixcon science fiction show, which will be held in downtown Atlanta during May. Second-and third-place winners will receive $15 and $10 gift certificates spenilable at a Clayton book store that has not yet been chosen.
Magic Brush contest artwork must be either a painting or another two-dimensional medium, and have a theme related to science fiction, fantasy or both. Entries will be judged for creativity, imagination, theme and style.
Guidelines and deadlines are the same as those for the Silver Nova contest, and the same prizes will be awarded. Art must be delivered to the Riverdale library.
Parking at the library is limited, so those attending Saturday programs are encouraged to organize a car pool. Information: Frank Agueli, 997-7777.
