John Campbell Rees, 39, from Treherbert, has a science-fiction degree from University of Glamorgan and is a self-confessed Doctor Who super-fan. He believes the best sidekicks are:
Sarah Jane Smith (aka Elisabeth Sladen, above)
'She was with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker back in the '70s and she did a guest spot in this series. For a lot of fans my age she is the companion they grew up with and she was one of the longest-running companions. She has got quite a special spot in the heart of most fans.'

Romana (aka Mary Tamm, above right, and Lalla Ward)
'She was a Time Lady, the same race as the Doctor. She was played by two different actresses - first by Mary Tamm and then by Lalla Ward. She was someone who the Doctor could bounce off of as an equal, although there were a lot of screaming moments with her.'

'In my opinion she was the prettiest. She was around from 1966 to 1967. She was lovely and she had the loudest scream. In fact, in her final story she defeated the monster by screaming very loudly.'

'He was the companion for most of Patrick Troughton's time as the Doctor. He was just a fun character, very open and willing to try new things. He was taken from his very small world in 18th century Scotland and shown the whole of the universe. It was fun to watch.'
