THE special-effects team pulled out all the stops in this festive edition of the nation's favourite sci-fi series.
Catherine Tate was clearly having a ball as a man-mad office temp who finds herself whisked off to the Tardis just as she is about to be wed. The car chase in which she was rescued from alien robots was particularly well done and the final scene in which the evil spider woman and her offspring went to a watery grave was spectacular. David Tennant even stopped grinning long enough to register some satisfaction at the destruction of yet another adversary.
News that he is set to leave the show in pursuit of a film career will upset many of the programme's fans, but it's hardly surprising that he should make the move. He had established himself as one of the best actors in British television before he took on the role of the Doctor, and the show's producers should have known that he would not stay long enough to see himself typecast.
I look forward to seeing him return to his native Scots accent in future roles. The estuary English accent that he adopted for Doctor Who, and his frenetic mugging, set my teeth on edge. I hope that the actor who replaces him will take the part a little more seriously.
While I don't want to see a return to the hammy delivery favoured by Jon Pertwee, who played Doctor Who as if it was Shakespeare, it would be a relief to see a less tongue-in-cheek approach to the role than we have had from David Tennant and his predecessor, Christopher Ecclestone.
Spelling correction: Christopher Eccleston
