Trainspotting's Psycho Wants To Be New Timelord

BIG screen baddie Robert Carlyle has revealed he is interested in becoming a small screen good guy - by taking over as the next Doctor Who.

The Glasgow-based star is best known as hardman Begbie from Trainspotting and as psycho Reynard in Bond film The World is Not Enough.

Bobby was hotly tipped by the bookies to take over the Timelord role last year.

But now it seems he has really thrown his hat into the ring to replace fellow Scot David Tennant.

The 46-year-old has finally admitted yesterday he could be tempted to play Doctor Who.

However, the Full Monty actor won't fully commit until Tennant, 36, officially quits.

Robert told Radio Times: "Nobody has been in touch with me about Doctor Who, so I really don't know where that came from. It's David's part and nothing to do with me, so I can't really think about it at the moment.

"But would I do it? Possibly."

Bobby joins the likes of Robin Hood star Harry Lloyd, 24, Scouse actor David Morrissey, 44 and funnyman Peter Kay, 34, who've been linked with the part.

Life On Mars star John Simm has also been linked with the role, while Little Britain's Matt Lucas would also relish the opportunity to take over the controls of the Tardis.

The comedy star's partner Kevin McGee said: "Matt would love to be in Doctor Who. I can see him playing the part."

Tennant is contracted to appear in the next series of Doctor Who - which is currently being filmed - and three specials for next year.

However, he is tipped to quit the role at the end of 2009.

Tennant is the 10th Doctor and took over from Christopher Eccleston - who Robert Carlyle once murdered in an episode of hit ITV drama Cracker.

Since appearing in the latest Harry Potter film, The Goblet Of Fire, Tennant, from Paisley, has been deluged with film offers.

And he has joked in the past about his Doctor Who departure.

Earlier this month he said: "From the moment I accepted this job everyone said, 'When are you leaving?' A boy could get a complex."
