The RHS Spring Flower Show in Cardiff has a stronger Welsh flavour than ever before, writes Emily Lambert
A GARDEN created for a time lord is making a special appearance at this year's RHS Spring Flower Show in Cardiff.
A Garden In Time, complete with Tardis, was created by the parks services team at Cardiff Council in collaboration with BBC Wales for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Based on Doctor Who, which is made in and around the city, it is coming back home after landing an impressive Silver Gilt medal at Chelsea, where it attracted a huge amount of attention.
The garden, spearheaded by landscape officer Mo Dorken and her team, has a life-sized Tardis as its centre piece, complete with lights and sound effects.
One side of the garden is from the 1960s when Doctor Who first came to our screens, and on the other is a more contemporary landscape.
The display also features a few subtle artifacts, including a 1960s Cardiff rugby shirt, a modern Doctor Who figure, and a 1960s Doctor Who annual, with William Hartnell on the cover.
A spokesman for the RHS said, "A Garden in Time has a time travel theme with two gardens in one, designed to reflect the contrasting horticultural styles and approaches to garden design from the two different periods.
"It's separated by Doctor Who's Tardis which has bridged the decades.
"The design recreates the straight paths and borders which were prevalent in gardens from the 60s, and features shrubs, flowers and a vegetable area.
"In contrast, the 2007 garden features modern ideas and styles which are now easy to create and feature in many modern urban gardens.
"The garden also reflects a developing awareness of sustainability; composting waste materials for recycling in the garden, using mulches within plant areas to suppress weeds and retain moisture and selecting plants that can cope with drier conditions, reducing the need for watering."
This year's RHS Spring Flower Show in Cardiff has a stronger Welsh flavour than ever before, featuring the very latest in Welsh garden design, displays from leading Welsh nurseries and a showcase of the very best Welsh food, drink and crafts.
The RHS Show returns to Bute Park from April 18-20for the fourth year, and features two marquees of floral displays, many of them regulars at Chelsea, and horticultural creations from some of the country's most talented garden designers.
The event also includes an interactive allotment, reflecting the boom in demand for places to grow our own, and the opportunity to quiz the RHS advisory team about issues such as climate change and its effect on our gardens.
