ROWAN ATKINSON will play the BBC's ninth Doctor Who in a tongue-in-cheek revival of the cult show.
The star of Mr Bean and Blackadder will board the Time Lord's Tardis in a one-off spoof for Comic Relief night next week.
He will be joined by Absolutely Fabulous actress Julia Sawalha as his glamorous and intelligent assistant and Jonathan Pryce will play his enemy The Master.
Fans of the science fiction series are campaigning for the BBC to revive the show, axed in 1989 after 26 years. Paul McGann played the Doctor in a feature film three years ago, but it was poorly received.
Doctor Who Appreciation Society spokesman. Andrew Eaton said: "Rowan Atkinson will make a great Doctor, and anything that keeps the programme in the public eye is good news. I'm sure there will be a lot of interest in this."
Comic Relief's Red Nose Day runs from 7pm on BBC1 on Friday, 12 March.
