ATTENTION Earthlings: Daleks and Cybermen went on sale yesterday... because the BBC ran out of space... out of space... out of space...
Costumes for TV science fiction's best-known characters went under the hammer In London yesterday in the first ever BBC sale of selected pieces from the Dr Who wardrobe. The sale came because the BBC had no storage room left for the costumes from the 25-year-old series.
Bonhams' auctioneer Duncan Chilcott said bids from fans- 'Who-les' - had come in from all over the English speaking world.
He said before the auction: "This is likely to be the only sale of Dr Who. The BBC do not realise how commercially exciting a sale like this is because for the fans it is a unique chance to possess something of their heroes."
The sale was specially important because last year the BBC did not make a new series. "Many Dr Who fans are concerned that this may be the end," he said.
At the viewing on Friday there were fans dressed In Dr Who T-shirts and jumpers. Yesterday there was a queue waiting to catch a glimpse of costumes worn by Peter Davison, Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy when they played the Time Lord doctor who travels the centuries.
There were also outfits sported by the various doctors' assistants and of course the garb of the doctor's enemies.
The Daleks, valued at £4,000, attracted the most Interest. But Mr Chilcott said the Cyberman and Mentor outfits were easier to wear.
