Dalek lands in Hampshire (thanks to SFX) questions,
SFX DALEK COMPETITION
How does it feel to win a Dalek? "It's a bit of a conversation stopper," confesses Mike Stevens, who scooped top prize in SFX's recent Dalek competition. "You expect to win money or holidays or stuff like that, but a Dalek? It's certainly different..."
The Dalek is a full-size replica of one of Skaro's finest, built by This Planet Earth, the only company licensed to craft those Dalekanium shells. Mike, from Basingstoke, says the most common reaction to his new plaything is, "'It's a lot bigger than I thought!'
"I knew it was a Dalek as a prize," he explains, "but I wasn't sure if it was a full-size one or one of these little ones you get in the shops. I was quite surprised when it turned out to be the real thing."
Winning the prize was a family affair. Mike's sister Lynne had seen the competition in her boyfriend, Sean's, copy of SFX, and she suggested that they should pit their wits against the dastardly Dalek-based questions we spread across two issues of the mag.
"Lynne answered a lot of the questions that required research," Mike admits. "God, they were quite obscure questions, weren't they? I always thought I was an expert at some of these things, then you start looking at some of those where you've got a photo of a Dalek and you have to say which series it's from. That was tough!"
Both submitted entries, but it was Mike who got lucky. "He's a bit jammy," says Lynne. "I got him to enter because he was more likely to win. My dad says that if he goes to the pub with him, he always wins the raffle or something like that."
But Lynne's had the last laugh, as it's her house that's become the Dalek's permanent stomping ground. "Not long after we got it she sent out this photo of her cuddling the Dalek, saying "Me and my Dalek?" laughs Mike. "But I've got visiting rights, so that's all right."
