DR. WHO has been banned by a TV network because Chinese viewers claimed that the series portrayed them as "pig-tailed coolies".

Six episodes of the Doctor's adventures starring Tom Baker and called [[broadwcast:The Talons of Weng-Chiang|The Talons of Weng Chan]] have been rejected.

The network in Ontario, Canada, asked a panel of Chinese immigrants to preview the films and give their views.

They reported: "They are dangerous, offensive and show a racist stereotyping of people of Chinese origin."

Don Thomson, a senior [[broadwcast:TVOntario|TV Ontario]] official said: "It is censorship but in a good cause." He said the programme drew a large and impressionable juvenile audience.

Giles Neel, the BBC's representative in Canada, said in Toronto: "We are sorry it might be felt that it was offensive to a section of the community. This was not our intention."
