SPACE ACE ... Sophie with Time Lord Sylvester McCoy DOCTOR Who took time out today to show off his new hot-headed cool-talking sidekick.

Sophie Aldred, 24, of Blackheath, will play streetwise teenager Ace and she is set to give a whole new dimension to the role of assistant.

The good Doctor, played by Sylvester McCoy, has been warned he faces years of trouble from his lively new recruit, who joins his crew full-time In September.

Dr Who's producer John Nathan-Turner said: "Ace is a very lively and independently-minded girl. She is also a bit of a feminist and will certainly give Dr Who plenty to think about."

Sophie got the job after graduating with a drama degree and singing for a year in working men's clubs.

"It is my first TV role and I am very excited about it," she said.

Bonnie Langford, who plays the current assistant, is to film a new variety show spectacular before taking the lead in the West End hit Charlie Girl.
