THEY first sent terrified children scuttling behind the sofa more than 40 years ago.
And, as these graphic pictures show, the Cybermen have lost none of their evil malevolence in the past four decades.
They return in this year's Christmas special when Doctor Who star David Tennant has to fend them off, armed with nothing more than a cutlass.
The clash comes when the Bathgate-born actor is relentlessly pursued by the burly cyborg as he tries to protect a fellow Time Lord, played by David Morrisey.
Doctor Who: The Next Doctor is set on Christmas Eve 1851 and sees the two doctors join forces to try to stop the CyberKing.
The episode also stars Dervla Kirwan as Miss Hartigan, who is leading the Cybermen and Velile Tshabalala as Morrissey's doctor's assistant, Rosita.
Morrissey's character has his own version of a Tardis - a hot air balloon called a Tethered Aerial Release Developed In Style.
Earlier this week, Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies confirmed the doctor will be without a permanent companion next year..
Asked to say who might take over the lead when Tennant leaves the show, he replied that he'd like to see Catherine Zeta-Jones or Lesley Sharp play a female doctor.
At the moment, Tennant is nursing a bad back, which has forced him to pull out of his stage role as Hamlet in the Royal Shakespeare Company's London production until he gets better.
Meanwhile, shooting on the new Doctor Who episodes starts next month - and Davies said he was hopeful that Tennant will have recovered by then.
He added: 'However, we'll have to be very careful with him. I don't think he will be swinging on a wire on the first day.' Since its revival in 2005, after a 16-year absence, Doctor Who has proved to be BBC drama's biggest success story, with more than ten million people watching the climax of this year's series.
In fact, so great is its present popularity there is talk of a big screen version.
Doctor Who: The Next Doctor will be shown on Christmas Day on BBC1.
