Well, the BBC has certainly crammed a lot of The Doctors, TARDISes, aliens, companions, planets and fezzes into one 75-minute 50th Anniversary Special.

It’s a gigantic whovian home coming of sorts with deceased doctors dropped in from archival-footage, shape-shifting Zygons appearing after a 38-year absence and the TARDIS airlifted to London’s Trafalgar Square in front of the National Gallery.

The Day of the Doctor was simulcast in 94 countries across six continents and in addition to the TV broadcast; the episode was screened in more than 1,500 cinemas worldwide, including Canada.

The show featured three Doctors, David Tennant, Matt Smith and John Hurt. Hurt’s first appearance as a Doctor was noteworthy as was Joanna Page as Queen Elizabeth 1. Companion Billie Piper returns and we were treated to cameos from Tom Baker and Peter Capaldi, who replaces Matt Smith later this year.

Head writer, Steven Moffat did a cracker job with the 50th anniversary episode and prospects for another 50 years of Doctor Who look very bright. In the near future, I am looking forward to the regenerated Doctor Who this Christmas.

Extras include two mini episodes and trailers, but the best of the bunch is Doctor Who Explained and Behind the scenes on The Day of the Doctor.
