RADIO 4's Midweek chat show discussed the sale in a London auction house of the costumes and artefacts from Dr Who. But my enjoyment of the auctioneer's appreciation of all the period tat from one of 'the most popular sci-fi serials ever would have been sharper had I not been aware of the enormous advantage the BBC was getting from advertising the sale of its second-hand wares.
Besides usefully clearing the Dr Who props out of its warehouse and wardrobe, the sale is likely to add appreciably to the corporation's revenues. Which is as it should be, I suppose, in these economy-conscious times. But to have had to pay the commercial rate for advertising a sale from which it benefits financially might have cost the BBC a prettier penny than Dr Who's old clothes may bring it. Is in-house advertising any different from the outside stuff which the BBC still will not accept?
