JODIE WHITTAKER WILL BE THE 13TH "Doctor Who" and the first woman in the role after the BBC named her as the new time lord, one of the world's most iconic sci-fi characters on television.
The Doctor's identity was revealed after the end of the Wimbledon men's tennis finals on BBC One and on the official "Doctor Who" Twitter feed. The Doctor has taken female form before, but Whittaker's will be the first to be played by a woman for an entire series.
"I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey, with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet," said the actress, who also starred in "Attack the Block" and "Broadchurch." "It's more than an honor to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait."
She replaces Peter Capaldi (right), who became the 12th Doctor Who in 2013.
