[edit]

AT ONE time, the goal of every actor was to play Hamlet. Now the focus seems to have shifted to Dr Who, which in turn has moved from the children's slot to adult viewing.

Meeting Peter Davidson at the weekend, and congratulating him on the selfless manner in which he gave the batmilk antidote to the delightful Nicola Bryant to save her from Androzani fungoid poisoning (my brain hurts!), he agreed that the role of Dr Who implied a certain achievement, like belonging to the most exclusive club in the world.

This week Colin Baker joins that club, alongside Mr Davidson, Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton and the late William Hartnell. That's a lot of people in one phone box.

It is difficult to define the appeal of this series, as it is now being viewed by parents who were toddlers themselves when Dr Who first landed in his Tardis on November 23, 1963.

Is it really that long ago, relatively speaking?
