IT'S TURNING into a doggie column this week — ex-Doctor Who Peter Davison (right) is surrounded by sheepdog puppies on Jackanory (Monday-Friday BBC1).
From a farm in Cambridgeshire he will be telling the story of the The Sheep-Pig, a book by Dick King-Smith which won the 1984 Guardian award for children's fiction.
It's a story about a piglet won as a prize by a sheep farmer at a country fair who doesn't have much use for a little pig.
However, one of his dogs takes pity on the piglet and soon it's learning to round up sheep with its adopted family. And it does so well it's entered for a televised sheepdog trial!
Says Peter: 'We had a great time on the farm. I rather like
pigs — I had quite a lot to do with them when we filmed All Creatures Great and Small. But this time I had to choose a voice for one.
'There were six sheepdog puppies on the farm and I wanted to take one home. But I managed to resist — we already have two dogs —Spot and Alice.'
And, talking of animals, the stories from Monday to Thursday in this week's Listening Corner, Radio 4's series for the under-fives (1.55 VHF only), feature cats and mice. Pam Ayres narrates.
