WHEN I saw Dr. Who and his two companions on December 18, they had escaped into time with the precious mineral which will give the Daleks complete control of the Universe. For a seasonable bit of goodwill Terry Nation left the Daleks offstage and indulged in a little gentle leg-pulling of the viewers. Dr. Who, Steve and Sara (William Hartnell, Peter Purves and Jean Marsh) landed in a police station which looked suspiciously like the Z-Cars one but wasn't. Escaping from there they materialised in a silent picture studio of the twenties and were chased in a manner not entirely out of play with the surroundings. This second joke did not work quite so well as everyone must have expected because too much depended on how good a knowledge the viewers had of silent films. It would have been much better with more chases. a few custard pies (just fancy Dr. Who getting a pie!) and less chat.
Well, now the interlude is ended and next week we shall no doubt hear those metallic voices threatening wholesale extermination, which will mean more than anything that the time of peace on earth and goodwill to all men is over.
